French economist Dominique Strauss-Kahn becomes the managing director of the International Monetary Fund in 2007 with the backing of French president Nicolas Sarkozy. He resigns four years late following allegations that he had sexually assaulted a hotel employee. The case against Strauss-Khan is not pursued due to credibility problems with the employee. A subsequent civil suit against him is settled out of court.
